Hermann Ebbinghaus found that only about a third of the learning effort was still “saved” one day later. Rereading also creates a false feeling of knowing. Self-testing works far better: in one study, students who practised recall remembered 61% of a passage after a week, while rereaders remembered 40%. A week later, the same child sits in the exam hall and stares at a blank page. The answer was right there yesterday. So where did it go?

Many parents and students still believe that forgetting means a child is careless or not clever enough. The reality on the ground is somewhat different. Forgetting is how every human brain works, and toppers forget too. The trouble is rarely the child. It is usually the way the chapter was revised, or not revised, after class.

This blog explains why this happens, using simple research and real data from India. Remembering means the student can bring that idea back later, alone, with the book closed. These are two separate jobs for the brain.

In class, the student gets plenty of help. There is a diagram on the smart board, a friend’s question and the teacher’s voice. All of these act like clues. In the exam hall, every clue disappears. The student has to rebuild the answer from memory, with a clock ticking.

Recognition vs Recall: The Hidden Trap

Recognition means “I have seen this before.” Recall means “I can say or write this without help.” When a student rereads notes, the page feels familiar, and familiar feels like knowing. But most school tests ask for recall, not recognition. This gap is the main reason a chapter that felt easy in class suddenly feels strange in the exam.

What Is the Forgetting Curve?

The forgetting curve shows how quickly new learning fades when nobody revises it. A bigger saving meant more memory was still there. In 2015, two researchers at the University of Amsterdam repeated his experiment and found a very similar curve.

Table 1: How Fast Learning Fades Without Revision

Time after learning

Learning still “saved”

What it means for a student

20 minutes

58.2%

Before the next period ends, part of the lesson has already started to fade.

1 hour

44.2%

By lunch break, a morning lesson has slipped a lot.

About 9 hours

35.8%

By bedtime, roughly a third of the effort is still saved.

1 day

33.7%

Next morning, most of the effort has to be repeated.

2 days

27.8%

Without revision, the drop keeps going.

6 days

25.4%

After a week, around a quarter remains.

31 days

21.1%

By the monthly test, about a fifth of the effort is still saved.

Source: Ebbinghaus (1885) original data, as reported and replicated in Murre & Dros (2015), PLOS ONE.

It is worth noting that the curve drops fastest in the first few hours and then flattens.
